Spherical Segment

Properties and formulas for calculating a sphere segment

Definition

A spherical segment (also spherical section) is a part of a sphere, which is separated by the cut with a plane.

A spherical segment has the shape of a dome and has a circular disk as its base. A hemisphere is a special case of a spherical segment in which the cut through the center of the sphere divides it into two equal halves. The curved part of the surface of a spherical segment is called the spherical cap.

The segment of a sphere is determined by the radius r, its height h and the segment radius a.

Formulas

In all formulas, − should be used for ± if the sphere section is less than half the size of the sphere, otherwise + should be used for ±.
